Understanding Sinusitis

About Sinusitis

Sinusitis is swelling of the sinuses, usually caused by an infection. It's common and usually clears up on its own within 2 to 3 weeks. However, medicines can help if it's taking a long time to go away.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of sinusitis include:

  • Pain, swelling and tenderness around your cheeks, eyes or forehead
  • A blocked nose
  • A reduced sense of smell
  • Green or yellow mucus from your nose
  • A sinus headache
  • A high temperature
  • Toothache
  • Bad breath

Signs of Chronic Sinusitis

You may have chronic sinusitis if you have sinusitis symptoms that last for more than 12 weeks. Signs include:

  • A blocked nose for more than 12 weeks
  • Discharge from your nose for more than 12 weeks
  • A reduced sense of smell for more than 12 weeks
  • Pain in your face
  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in your face

Self-Care Tips

To help relieve sinusitis symptoms at home:

Do

  • Take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce pain and discomfort
  • Use a decongestant nasal spray or drops to help unblock your nose
  • Clean your nose with a salt water solution to ease congestion
  • Hold a warm flannel to your face to ease pain
  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids

Don't

  • Do not use decongestant sprays or drops for more than a week
  • Do not use decongestants if you're taking certain medicines or have certain health conditions
  • Do not use nasal decongestants for more than 7 days
  • Do not give aspirin to children under 16

When to Seek Medical Help

While most cases of sinusitis clear up on their own, you should seek medical advice if:

See a GP if:

  • Your symptoms are severe or getting worse
  • Your symptoms have not improved after 7 to 10 days
  • You keep getting sinusitis
  • You have symptoms that are not typical of sinusitis
  • You have a high temperature
  • You're feeling very unwell
